Address the cultural gaps in many environmental initiatives, and make culturally inclusive seeds free to our diverse communities.
To contribute to the protection of plan biodiversity and the saving of locally adapted, climate resilient seeds.
And, to knock down other obstacles, like funds or knowledge, preventing people from trying to grow a garden.
As a community pilot project, we’ve got quite a few goals we want to achieve to maximise the impact of our work.
Expand our collection of seeds to include seeds that reflect the diversity of our communities.
Make our seeds more accessible to folks. This includes having our resources translated into commonly spoken languages in each region, distributing seeds at different locations and in different methods, and catering to individuals with disabilities.
Engage more youth in land stewardship with new and creative programming, catering to a wide variety of skills and interests. For instance, MYSL organised a watercolour making workshop, where we used pigments from the very plants we grew.
Essentially, the whole concept of a seed library revolves around borrowing and returning, similar to an actual library. Gardeners, whether they are already experts or simply trying their hand at growing, can borrow from our wide variety of seeds. Once they are able to collect seeds from their own plants, they can donate them to the library, in hopes that a fellow gardener can experience the joy of growing their own produce, and enjoy the fruits of their labour (pun intended).
We would like to acknowledge that the Mississauga Youth Seed Library is on Treaty 13 and “A Dish With One Spoon” Wampum belt territory (also known as Mississauga, Ontario). We send gratitude to those who have been caretakers of this land since time immemorial and we commit to bettering our relations with the land and human and more-than-human kin we share it with.
